My favorite kitchen gadgets

The idea for this post has been marinating in my head for a while now. I pull out the same kitchen tools as I unload the dishwasher daily. I love baking and cooking; these are my favorite gadgets and tools. While I wanted to make this a top-five list, the number of favorites grew.

I hope you enjoy this list and learn something or are inspired to cook or bake something. Do you have a favorite piece that didn’t make the list? Share yours in the comments.

Microplane Grater Zester : Favorite Kitchen Gadgets

I use citrus in my cooking all the time. Lemon zest gives recipes a pop of flavor. I love adding lemon to my madeleines. You can also use this Microplane for Parmesan cheese or garlic. We use this exact tool daily.

    Vegetable Peeler

I make salads just about daily and I use this vegetable peeler for carrots. This vegetable peeler has held up over the time and easy to wash in the dishwasher.

Kitchen Scale: Kitchen Gadgets I Love

I purchased this kitchen scale off of Amazon in 2021 and it is still going strong for $10. If you do not bake with a scale, you are missing out. This is a game changer and so easy to use. I typically look for the gram weight of flour, sugar, and butter if it is not listed in a recipe. Some recipes will have the grams listed next to the cups (thank you!) Others take a quick minute to look up. I need to tape the different weights on the scale.

For example, one cup of flour is 120 grams. I use clear glass bowls. See below to measure each ingredient.

    Stacking Glass Bowls

These are the perfect glass bowls that stack inside for easy storage. When I bake or cook, each ingredient goes inside. It makes it easy to organize and weigh all your wet and dry ingredients.

My sister noticed these on her visit and requested a set for her birthday earlier this year. I use these all the time!

    Lemon and Lime Juicer

I use this lemon and lime juicer all the time! We are constantly looking for it. If it is not in the drawer, it in the dishwasher. The smaller slot is for limes, the larger is for lemons. I use citrus juice for marinades and dressings.

It is also great for cocktails for citrus juice!

Silicone Pastry Brush: Favorite Kitchen Gadgets

I don’t know where I bought my rubber brush, but I love it and would be lost without it. It can be used for oil, butter, or marinades. What I love about it is how easily you can clean it. Everything comes off the rubber with soap and water.

    Pizza Cutter

Pizza night is a weekly staple on our dinner menu. My husband takes charge and we typically grab dough from Whole Foods and make our own at home. We use this pizza cutter all the time.

You can also use this with quesadillas, tortillas for homemade chips, and baking.

    Metal Scooper

This metal scooper comes in handy more than you would imagine. I use it for baking madeleines, cookies, and muffins. Each dessert is perfectly measured and dough dispensed with the flick of the wrist. The metal scooper cleans easily with soap and water or the dishwasher.

It also makes meatballs a breeze. I use these for What’s Gaby Cookings Parmesan meatballs.

There are a lot of different size options for the metal scoopers. I found that the 2 tablespoon size works best.

Material Cutting Boards: Favorite Kitchen Gadgets

I use my cutting boards daily for lunch and dinner prep. Fruits and vegetables go into glass containers in our fridge.

When it comes to cutting boards, I love the ones from Material. They come in great colors and are made from recycled plastic. I prefer to cut meat and produce on boards that can be washed. Wood boards are great but I worry about meat and bacteria.

*The brand gifted me two boards to try. I loved them so much I plan on purchasing more.

    Metal Whisk

I use my metal whisk for baking often to mix ingredients. A few on hand are always good because one is always dirty.

Personally, I love a small whisk for dressings. If you don’t own one, I highly recommend adding at least one to your kitchen gadget drawer.

  1. Agree with the zester – I use daily. Do you have any glass storage container recommendations? Or any herb storage ideas?

    • Hi Amanda,

I am obsessed with the Rubbermaid glass storage containers. We use them in the fridge for just about everything. You can wrap your herbs in a damp paper towel and storm them in glass container. That usually does the trick for me!

    • Hi Marian,

I do too! We actually got a set for our wedding and I use them daily. Where did you get yours?

  2. Great list! I have all of them. I also love my long wooden cylindrical rolling pin that I inherited from my grandmother who made, besides many other delicious foods, apple strudel and her own noodles with it.

    • I love this so much, Janis! What a special piece to have in your kitchen to remind you of your grandmother.

  3. I also love my nesting bowls. I had them on my shopping list for months before purchasing, and once I started using them, I couldn’t believe I waited so long. A good tool makes all the difference. Two other “nesting” items I love…I have a set of nesting mise en place nesting bowls as well as three aluminum baking sheets in graduating sizes. Bon apetit!

    • Hi Amy,

Yes, nesting bowls are so good. Also, love the aluminium baking sheets in different sizes. Have you tried a silpat for your baking sheets? Game changer!

  4. Hi Rebecca,
I love gadgets. One of your choices, the citrus squeezer, I have replaced with the one with two handles that works sideways, gets every drop, and is so easy to use.
One of my favorite haunts in Paris is Dehillerin, where I have a nice salesman who sometimes gets frustrated with me because I already have so much stuff. Next trip is coming up and I can’t wait to try something new.

    • Hi Patti!

I dream of visiting Dehillerin with you one day in Paris. I would love to see what you have and what you discover. xo

  5. Great list! We’ve been thinking along the same lines, as my husband and I are retiring to Italy 3 weeks from tomorrow, and we shipped our belongings earlier this week. (Our son is moving into our condo, so we’re leaving furniture, pantry staples and condiments, all electric appliances for him.) We only have space for the most minimal kitchen items in our remaining weeks here and for the 2-3 weeks before things arrive in Italy because we will need to carry the last few things with us. Super-minimalist kitchen: can opener, wine opener, thin flexible cutting board, 1 paring knife, small colander, 1 spoon, 1 spatula, 2 pans. We’ll likely be eating out more than usual until we leave.

  6. All great gadgets to have! I would also recommend a steel ball whisk (got mine from Sur La Table). Great for things that have chocolate chips or nuts, etc. You won’t get those annoying lumps stuck in the loops.

    • Gloria,

Thank you for the great tip! I love getting lost in the gadget section at Sur La Table. I will keep an eye out on my next visit.

  7. I love my mushroom brush—gets off the dirt and doesn’t damage the mushrooms
“Chef’n ShroomBroom Mushroom Cleaning Brush and Corer” on Amazon. I use glass cutting boards that I can put in the dishwasher—I, too, want a CLEAN cutting board. Other handy kitchen gadgets: my tomato knife, my avocado knife-corer, my small curved corer knife (use daily for strawberries). Also, saucepans with lids with holes for easy draining!

    • Jan,

You have a great list! Thank you so much for sharing all these wonderful kitchen gadgets. I am going to look up your glass cutting boards now. xo

  8. One of my favorites is an adjustable cylindrical measuring cup. Wonderful for all those ingredients that don’t come out of regular measuring cups so well, such as honey or peanut butter.

    • oh I love that! Peanut butter and honey are very difficult with regular measuring cups. Thank you!

  9. Hi Rebecca,
This is a great list and I have nearly all the same items! I also love my Danish dough whisk, which is fantastic for smoothly mixing bread doughs by hand (leevalley.com). It’s exceptionally sturdy and useful if you do a lot of baking.

    Best,
    Rhona
